Maintenance expenses for fleet cars were flat during the 2006 calendar year compared to 2005. The main factors contributing to the stability of fleet maintenance costs in 2006 were longer oil drain intervals, extended tire tread wear, and increased life from ceramic brake pads.

Abbott is set to become the first Fortune 500 company to go “carbon neutral” with its entire U.S. fleet of company vehicles. This is a seminal event in the history of fleet management. It is emblematic of a much larger sea change occurring today in fleet management – the proliferation of corporate green initiatives and their influence on vehicle selector decisions.

Industrywide, one out of three fleets does not order post-employment motor vehicle record (MVR) checks on employee drivers. When asked why, many fleet managers will tell you privately the reason for not doing so is that they would rather not know. The logic is by not knowing they distance themselves from potential negligent entrustment and negligent retention lawsuits.

Increasing fuel efficiency and corporate “green” initiatives will be a much greater factor in selector decisions than prior years, according to surveyed fleet managers. However, for most, CPA monies are the deciding factor.
