McClellan and Copeland Named to Goodyear North American Leadership Positions

ARTICLE TOOLS        | E-MailPrint

AKRON, OHIO – Stephen McClellan and Joe Copeland have been named to new leadership assignments within Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's North American tire business.

McClellan, formerly vice president of Commercial Tire Systems, has been named president of the North American Tire Consumer business, replacing Lawrence Mason, who has announced he will leave the company. Copeland, previously vice president of the Off-Highway businesses, becomes vice president of Commercial Tire Systems, replacing McClellan. A replacement for Copeland will be named at a later date.

McClellan has spent his career at Goodyear since joining the company in 1988. Most of his experience has been in a variety of management roles within the consumer tire business, including finance, sales, and distribution. In December 2001, he moved into the commercial tire business, serving as president of Wingfoot Commercial Tire Systems, Goodyear's industry-leading national network of commercial tire sales, retreading, and service. He was promoted to vice president, Commercial Tire Systems in September 2003.

Copeland has a broad base of experience both outside and inside of Goodyear. He came to Goodyear in August 2000 having worked in various capacities at Ford Motor Company and Intel Corporation. At Goodyear, he has held a number of significant positions, including president of Goodyear's chemical division, senior vice president of business development, strategy and restructuring, and CEO of South Pacific Tyre (Australia) before moving into the position of vice president of Off-Highway businesses in February 2007.

Replacement Tires: A Growing Fleet Expense

By Mike Antich
Replacement tires are the third-largest expense category for fleets. In the past three years, this expense category has grown as a result of multiple price increases from all major tire OEMs. In 2008, year-to-date tire replacement costs have increased 4-10 percent. This follows a 3-4 percent price increase in 2007 and an 8-10 percent price increase in 2006. The consensus is replacement tire prices will increase again in 2009.

Fuel Continues to be the No. 1 Threat to Fleet

By Mike Antich
The number one threat to fleets continues to be the price of fuel, despite the fact that fuel prices have been declining due to the global economic slowdown. Year-to-date, the cost of fuel has increased 30 percent in 2008 compared to 2007. The Energy Information Administration is projecting fuel to average $3.82 per gallon in calendar-year 2009. Fuel is the potential game changer of the fleet industry. Consider two recent examples as harbingers of things to come.
