BMW is shifting production of its 3 Series entry luxury sedan to a new plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, starting in 2019, BMW has announced.

The company began work on the new plant on June 16, and plans to invest $1 billion in the facility.

The move shifts 3 Series production from BMW's Plant Rosslyn in South Africa, which will now focus on building only the X3.

The 3 Series is now in its sixth generation with the F30/F31 platform that began with the 2012 model year.
