Mercedes-Benz said it’s developing a system that will use quick response (QR) codes to assist emergency first responders in tending to accident victims trapped in a vehicle.

Future Mercedes-Benz vehicles will each include two stickers with a QR code (barcode), which emergency workers will be able to scan using any smartphone or tablet that’s equipped with a camera. Then a rescue map for the specific vehicle type will be displayed on the electronics device, pinpointing the location of the airbags, battery, tanks, electric cables, high-pressure cylinders and other components. In hybrid models, the QR code-prompted display will also indicate the location of the additional batteries and high-voltage cables.

Such information is vital when emergency workers are forced to use the Jaws of Life or similar tool to remove a driver or passenger after a collision.

The code stickers will be placed on the fuel tank flap and on the B-pillar on the opposite vehicle side, the automaker said.
