General Motors is putting the finishing touches on one of the largest automotive safety testing areas in North America at its Milford Proving Ground campus in Michigan, the automaker has announced.

GM has invested $12 million in the 52-acre project that broke ground in June 2013 and will be fully functional by December. The testing area has been designed for developing, testing, and validating crash avoidance features.

The facility will include a 16-acre dynamics pad and various road networks to evaluate sensors, algorithms, and performance of these features, including autonomous systems and vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

The facility will be known as the Active Safety Testing Area, or ASTA.
