General Motors is spinning off Cadillac as a separate business unit and moving its operations to New York in 2015 as a strategic move to grow the brand.

The move will allow Cadillac managers to "pursue growing opportunities in the luxury automotive market with more focus and clarity," according to a GM release.

Cadillac is shifting its strategic approach to the luxury vehicle market under the leadership of Johan de Nysschen, who joined the brand as its new president in August. Cadillac is also developing a new full-size sedan that will go into production in the fourth quarter of 2015.
