Instead of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, Toyota will roll out a smartphone-integration infotainment platform from Silicon Valley-based Telenav, the technology provider has announced.

Toyota will add Telenav's Scout GPS Link and UIEngine Link to the 2016 Tacoma mid-sized pickup, and eventually make it available in other 2016 vehicles equipped with Toyota's Entune Audio Plus system.

Scout GPS Link allows users to transfer navigation from their smartphones to the vehicle's in-dash screen using an app that can be downloaded via Apple's App Store or Google Play. UIEvolution's UIEngine Link provides the connectivity between the phone and vehicle, allowing users to access navigation and traffic data from Scout GPS with their mobile device.

The interface works with both Apple iOS and Android devices.

The system would mark a departure for Toyota, which will likely be the only automaker not offering Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in the immediate future.
