WASHINGTON - Robert McNamara, former president of Ford Motor Company, died in his sleep at age 93, reported Edmunds.com.

President of Ford in 1960 and the first person to lead the company from outside its founding family, McNamara shepherded the launch of the 1960 Ford Falcon sedan, according to Edmunds.

McNamara also served as U.S. defense secretary during the Vietnam War after vaulting to prominence as one of the "Whiz Kids" who revived the Ford Motor Company after World War II.

A Californian, McNamara earned a master's degree in business from Harvard and was a staff officer in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
