Audi of America will integrate toll payment technology into certain vehicles this year that will include a transponder built into the rear-view mirror, the automaker has announced. The models have not been specified.

The integrated toll module (or ITM) will allow the vehicle to communicate with toll-road infrastructure in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to allow payment of tolls digitally. The system helps "eliminate windscreen clutter and the need to manage multiple toll accounts," according to Audi.

Drivers can adjust the settings of the module through the vehicle’s MMI infotainment system, including turning it off and changing the occupant settings for HOV or HOT lanes. It can be registered with a nationwide tolling account.

The system was developed by Gentex Corp., which supplies auto-dimming mirrors for Audi vehicles.
