Fleet FAQ? Data-Driven Fleet Management

Q. We have a pretty good handle on TCO, but one thing we’re missing is asset utilization measurements. How can our telematics solution help?

A. Your telematics solution should be able to monitor the three key performance indicators (KPIs) for monitoring asset utilization:

  • Days driven
  • Drive time
  • Mileage

For example, Geotab’s Asset Utilization Report summarizes the 10 most used and the 10 least used vehicles in your fleet. This type of report helps to identify vehicles that need to be rotated into use more frequently, and also allows you to analyze why these assets aren’t being used as much as others in the fleet and vice versa.

This will help to determine future acquisition priorities, vehicle rightsizing and even vehicle spec’ing. In addition to the utilization report, you can also run the Fleet Distance Trend Report and the Watchdog Report. The former will help you determine if you need to flex up or downsize the fleet based on capacity. The latter will help you determine if you’re getting all of the data necessary from all fleet vehicles to monitor asset utilization.
