Fleet FAQ? Data-Driven Fleet Management

Q. We’ve recently had a rather serious collision—is there some way we can use the telematics data to reconstruct the incident?

A. Yes, there is. Collision reconstruction with telematics involves a process of using the GPS fleet tracking technology and software to understand the events that occurred before, during and after the incident.

For example, Geotab offers the Collision Reconstruction Add-In for MyGeotab, which is a free Marketplace solution for viewing, analyzing and interpreting collision data from Geotab GO tracking devices.

Among the critical pieces of data that can be accessed in the add-in are trips history, collision and log data, speed profile and accelerometer and RPM graphs. Reviewing and analyzing this data will help you to verify and understand what happened during the incident. It is important to ensure the telematics provider you are using has a built in accelerometer to pinpoint the movement on the x, y and z axis (forward and backward, side to side and up and down). Without these components, it is nearly impossible to be able to provide the accurate details on the data recording to provide a reconstruction analysis of the crash.
