The United Parcel Service has appointed David Abney, its current chief operating officer, as the logistics firm's new chief executive effective Sept. 1.

Abney, 58, is replacing Scott Davis, who is retiring. Davis has served as chairman and CEO since 2008. Davis, 62, will continue as non-executive chairman.

Abney takes over the top executive job nearly 40 years after starting with the company as a part-time package loader. He becomes the eleventh CEO in the company's 107-year history.

As chief operating officer, Abney had responsibility for UPS logistics, sustainability, and engineering, leading the company's investment in alternative fuel fleets, and implementing programs to expand the company's total freight volume. In that role, he directed the UPS transportation network serving more than 200 countries and territories.
