Mercedes-Benz USA is relocating its corporate headquarters to Atlanta from Mountvale, New Jersey, to move in closer proximity to its port and manufacturing operations.

The luxury automaker plans to move into a temporary facility in Atlanta's Central Perimeter district while constructing a state-of-the-art headquarters that will be ready in early 2017.

The company will begin moving employees in July; about 1,000 employees will relocate. Mercedes-Benz will keep sevearl operational areas in New Jersey, including a parts distribution center in Robbinsville and regional office in Montvale.

"Atlanta is a premier city which places us closer to our ever-growing Southeast customer base; our port in Brunswick, Ga.; and to Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, our Alabama manufacturing facility that accounts for half of the vehicles we sell here in the U.S.," said  Stephen Cannon, MBUSA president and CEO. "For our employees, Atlanta offers a strong quality of life, terrific schools and wonderful cultural and recreational opportunities."

Mercedes-Benz USA will provide additional details about the move by the end of January.
