The Jeep Grand Cherokee, which has found an audience among executive drivers, adds a Trailhawk trim grade for 2017 that enhances the vehicle's off-road capability without the high price tag.
To make its way over unpaved lands, the 2017 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk uses a special four-wheel-drive system, air suspension, and offers a "find a trail" feature in its navigation system.
Let's start with the vehicle's off-road powertrain, which includes the Quadra-Drive II 4WD system with a two-speed transfer case and electronic rear limited-slip differential (eLSD). An eLSD system can really help a vehicle's off-road traction because it uses an electronic control unit to make sure each wheel is getting enough torque.
Related to this, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk also offers a Selec-Trerrain traction control system with four modes to set up the system for snow, sand, mud, and an Auto setting that lets the vehicle make the decisions for you.
When you're driving off road, you may encounter rocks, brush or other natural obstacles that can damage the underside of a traditional vehicle. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk arrives with air suspension that allows the vehicle to be raised or lowered to three heights as high as 10.8 inches.
The vehicle is powered by a 3.6L V-6 mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Cargo space is plentiful. With the second row of seating folded down, 68.3 cubic feet of space is available. The 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted with 265/60R18 BSW all-season, all-terrain tires.
In the interior, the cabin layout is roomy. Heated front and rear seats provide plenty of comfort.
The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk offers plenty of value for its $43,990 starting price tag. The model we tested would retail for $50,125 because it included the Trailhawk Luxury Group package, Active Safety Group package, larger 8.4-inch navigation screen, Mopar roof rails, blind spot monitor, and cross path detection.
