Fleet FAQ? Fuel Management

Q. What is WEX’s fleet strategy in Europe and in Asia?

A. In these regions, a lot of what we do is following our customers. We are fortunate enough to have a database of more than 300,000 customers. A lot of them have a presence in other countries. Our presence there has been largely opportunistic. An opportunity presents itself and we acquire a fuel card company. A lot of that has been through partnerships. In Australia, we bought a fuel card company that was very similar to ours. It’s a closed-loop, proprietary network. In Europe, it was through a partnership. We acquired the Esso portfolio and we built it out that way. What we are seeing now is that a lot of our customers, which are multinationals, are saying: “Ideally, I’d like one solution.” However, they realize there won’t just be one solution around the world, just because of different regulatory issues, different pricing schemes.

Q. What is a fuel card? How does it work?

A. Fuel cards were designed to make it easier for businesses to pay when they fuel their vehicles. As fuel cards became more sophisticated, they also began offering businesses discounts and rebates plus the ability to track and analyze fuel purchases, creating the ability to control costs, making it easier to track expenses and enhance the bottom line without carrying cash or relying on inaccurate manual data entry.
