Fleet FAQ? Telematics & Fleet Tracking

Q. My company leadership has tasked me with reducing our carbon footprint. Is it possible to use my telematics solution to do that? I mainly use telematics for routing and geofencing.

A. Yes, and you may already be using your telematics solution to improve sustainability and not even realize it. For example, you mentioned that you use your telematics solution for routing. Optimized routing — which is available on many telematics solutions — will help you cut miles, which means needing less fuel, and emissions, likely feeding into your sustainability goals.

Telematics can help fleet sustainability by cutting emissions in a number of ways beyond cutting miles driven. These include:

  • Promoting efficient driving, and reducing idling
  • Managing the application of alternative fuels and powertrains, including EVs
  • Managing and practicing proactive vehicle maintenance

In each case, your telematics solution can be used to monitor vehicle operations, accumulate data — which can be used to further improve operations retrospectively — and alert fleet and driver managers about potentially wasteful behavior as it happens, and giving managers the opportunity to coach drivers how not to waste fuel.
