The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recognized the 2020 Chrysler Voyager, which will include a fleet-only model, with a five-star overall safety rating. It's the highest rating a vehicle can earn from the agency.

The five-star rating program is part of NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program. The federal government's program for evaluating vehicle safety performance has been in existence for 40 years. Technicians test vehicle performance in a variety of crash scenarios, and then the agency uses a five-star safety scale rating system to rate the new vehicles.

The minivan was put through the paces in a series of challenging crashworthiness evaluations. The Voyager aced them all — earning five-star ratings across the spectrum of tests.

The tests included front driver-side impact, front passenger-side impact, overall frontal impact, front seat combined barrier and pole impact, rear seat combined barrier and pole side impact, driver side barrier impact, rear passenger side barrier impact, side barrier impact, and overall side pole impact.

The new Voyager’s durability and performance can be credited in part to the use of high-strength steel in 72% of the vehicle’s body structure. In addition, the application of steel shaping technologies such as hydroforming results in intricately molded load beams that afford greater strength and stiffness than welded components, notes the automaker.

Moreover, the minivan’s door ring is assembled from tailor-welded blanks—sections of hot-stamped steel that vary in thickness, helping to maintain structural integrity in particular types of collisions.

The 2020 Voyager also offers several available safety features to help drivers avert crashes including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross path detection, and a rear park assist system.
