Ford Motor Co. will release the European-engineered Transit Connect, a fuel efficient, compact family van. The vehicle, which goes on sale in the summer, will cost $21,475. The price includes shipping.

In addition, Ford is collaborating with United Kingdom upfitter, Smith Electric Vehicles, to convert the Transit Connect to battery power. Ford says the vehicle will have a range up to 100 miles.

With around 600,000 units already produced, the compact van family is very well established in the European market. Immediately after its European market launch, the Transit Connect was named International Van of the Year 2003 by an expert jury of commercial vehicle editors.

Ford will display several versions of the 2010 Transit Connect at the Chicago Auto Show.
