South Fla. Leads State in Auto Thefts

In 2017, 21,179 vehicles were stolen between Miami and the North end of Palm Beach County, Florida, according to a recent report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). The number one reason: Unlocked car doors.

In fact, South Florida has ranked first in the state for auto thefts for two consecutive years, reports NBC's WPTV.

Experts say that the two biggest mistakes drivers make are failing to lock the car and leaving the keys in the vehicle — both of which invite thieves.

Fleet managers should remind drivers — particularly those in South Florida — to always safeguard against vehicle theft. Experts suggest parking in well-lit areas, locking the vehicle, taking the keys with you, and never leaving items visible on the seat or floor of the vehicle.

In addition, commercial drivers who work dayshifts should be equally vigilant as nighttime drivers. Police records indicate that auto thefts occur at all hours.
