WAUSAU, Wis. --- Highway safety experts are noting that high fuel costs have motivated drivers to slow down and take fewer trips, resulting in fewer highway fatalities. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation reports that preliminary data indicates highway crashes in the state killed 322 people in the first half of 2006 -- 27 fewer than the same period in 2005, according to the Associated Press. But the higher fuel prices have also prompted more people to drive motorcyles. Motorcycle accident fatalities are up this year --- 38 through June 30th compared to 30 in the same period last year.
