General Motors said its OnStar in-vehicle communications service would generate $5 billion in annual revenue by 2005. OnStar had about 1 million subscribers at the end of 2000 and anticipates 4 million by 2003. OnStar expects its revenue to grow 37 percent annually for the next several years, said Ron Zarrella, GM executive vice president for North America. He said he expects two more automakers to join GM and Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus this year in offering OnStar. GM has been aiming to increase sales by its non-vehicle businesses such as OnStar, as well as its service, parts and financing units. The communications service allows subscribers to make calls, check e-mail, get directions, and trade stocks from their vehicles. GM’s sales totaled $183.3 billion last year.
