The Northumberland County Sheriff’s Department has contracted with Government Acquisitions Inc. of North Carolina to obtain newer service vehicles for its depleted fleet. As reported by The News-Item, a Shamokin newspaper, the department seeks to lease two cars and a sports/utility vehicle through the company, which allows municipalities to purchase vehicles for a nominal fee of $1. Government Acquisitions allows sponsors to place advertisements on the fully equipped government vehicles. The vehicles are then leased by government entities for up to three years. At the end of the term, Government Acquisitions has the option of re-purchasing the vehicle for $1. The sheriff’s department has tried unsuccessfully to obtain vehicles through other programs, but budgetary constraints and red tape have stifled the process. According to the Plumbing Outlet, each of the department’s four vehicles has high mileage and one has already been permanently retired.
